1 SERVING = 1/2 CUP = ???

Under the “5 Servings of Fruits & Vegetables a Day” a serving was generally 1/2 cup.

Currently the USDA’s recommendation on the amount of fruit needed depends on age, gender and of course amount of physical exercise. Check out www.choosemyplate.gov/fruit to find the recommended amount of fruit for you.

But I’m still a 5-a-day type person, so what is a serving of fruit? I know a serving is 1/2 cup but since I don’t carry a measuring cup around with me, I want to know what a serving is in general terms. I’ve found one serving to be (unless otherwise noted)…

Apples

Apple — 1 large (3.25″ diameter) apple counts as 4 servings

1 small (2.5″ diameter) apple counts as 2 servings

Applesauce — 1 snack container of applesauce

Banana — 1 small (less than 6″ long) banana is 1 serving

1 large banana (8″ to 9″) is 2 servings

Cantaloupe — 1 medium wedge of cantaloupe

Clementine — 3 Clementines count as 2 servings

Dried fruit — 1/4 c

Grapes — 16 seedless grapes

Grapefruit — 1/2 grapefruit

Juice, 100% juice — 1/2 cup

Kiwi — 1 large kiwi

Mango — 1 large mango is approximately 3 servings

Nectarine — 1 fruit (2-1/2″ diameter) counts as 2 servings

Orange — 1 small orange (2-3/8″ diameter)

Peach — 1 small peach (2″ diameter)

Pineapple — 1 slice (3-1/2″ dia x 3/4″ thick) // 1/2 cup diced

Plum — 1 large plum

Raisins — 1 small box

Rambutan — 7 rambutan

Strawberries — 4 large strawberries

Tangerine — 1 medium tangerine

Watermelon — 6 melon balls is 1 serving // 1 small wedge is 2 servings

Help me add to the list, leave a reply below and let me know what your favorite fruit is and what’s a serving size.

*FYI:  I do receive $ from Amazon when you click on product links and purchase items from Amazon.

I don't know what you look at or buy and so far I've been able to buy, on average, 3 cups of coffee each year from the income.
